Can you explain the logic behind adding line-height to this workspace?

I've played with it but I can't make sense of the concept. Why not just deal with margin and padding only to get the desired style around the letter. I know that if I comment out the line-height, it does not look right, but shouldn't it look fine with just margin and padding??

You add them in order to make some elements easier to access on mobile devices, for example, the elements of the navigation when browsing from your smartphone.
