Can you explain what Pseudo Classes are?

So, I learned about the 'visited' pseudo class, but what exactly does that entail in the background? Is it a code that is already a part of HTML/HTML-5/CSS? Or is it something else?

I'm curious if there are other types of similar code for other functions.

A CSS pseudo-class is a keyword added to selectors that specifies a special state of the element to be selected. For example :hover will apply a style when the user hovers over the element specified by the selector. there are several other selectors, if you want more info on the subject check out the link below.
