Cannot Change Blank Properties

I've followed everything up until now, and I am wondering if I have set something up wrong! When I have my button selected, under the TexView dropdown in the properties panel I see each of the properties (i.e. Text Color, Text Size, Typeface, etc.) however, I am unable to edit them. I cannot type in the box. In fact, when I click on it a dropdown pops up with selectable items, but when I select the items nothing happens!

What I am doing wrong? I hate to get stuck on this seemingly simple problem!
