Cannot create a git branch on Mac OSX

In Terminal, when I type:

git branch foo_feature

I get the message:

fatal: Not a valid object name: 'master'.

All I have done in this directory is git init a repository. Is there another step I'm missing? Or a naming convention that I'm missing?

Maybe it is because you can't create a branch if you don't have at least 1 commit on your master branch yet.

I think that was the issue. Totally makes sense :)
