cannot set the height

I cannot set the height of my main content area here is the code pen page if you don't mind could you take a look http://cdpn.io/DwHcu help would be much appreciated

Well, sometimes you cannot change the height, but rather you can move things away from it with margins or padding. In this case I would use margin, as it doesn't affect inside the box.

margin:1em;
}

It seems as though you changed the padding of the top of your text rather than your margin.
