can't get access to the index of local host

hey-- doing the deep dive on php. currently on the video where they have u download xampp. pretty sure it has downloaded and is running fine. when i click on apache admin button it opened localhost/xampp on my browser (firefox, though i have tried this on IE and am having the same problem). so far so good. now the video (installing php on windows) tells me to delete the 'xampp' from the address so i can get to the index of the local host.

the trouble is every time i hit return, or click the button to go to the http://localhost/ page, for some reason the 'xampp' gets automatically pasted on to the address line and i am back to the admin page. tried all sorts of combinations to get to my local host, but anything that starts w/ 'http://localhost/' has 'xampp/' automatically added on to it.

i don't know if this is germane, but the 'xampp' on the address appears in a much lighter-grey font color, kinda like it has been greyed out.

any ideas?
