cant get id to work for <div>

I cant get the id part of the <div> to work i have put

<div id="wrap"> </div> then to call it

#wrap { max-width 940px; margin: 0 auto; }

Missing colon after 'max-width'. Also make sure this is the only element w/ id of 'wrap' in document.

#wrap {
    max-width: 940px;
    margin: 0 auto; 
}
