Can't get menu to show up in browser for Perform Part 1 of jQuery Basics

This launches fine in Workspace and I can see the menu but when I try to load it on my own in Chrome it doesn't work. Why is that?

var $select = $("<select></select>");
$("#menu").append($select);

$("#menu a").each(function() {
      var $anchor = $(this);
      var $option = $("<option></option>");
      $option.val($anchor.attr("href"));
      $option.text($anchor.text());
      $select.append($option);
});
