Cant type ampersand

Hello! I can't type && in the Java console, because it's just makes a ^C sign and begins a new line. How can I avert this problem? Another questions: When I start typing in console I can't switch back to the workspace, it still types into the consol, however the cursor is on the workspace already. Thanks
