coding header nav - keep class in anchor tag

Can someone please instruct me on how to keep the class attribute in the anchor tag for the nav in the header.php?

echo strip_tags(wp_nav_menu( $args), '<a>' 

I would like -

        <a class="..">

Hi Laurel:

Did you try adding to your $args

       $args = array (
          'items_wrap'   => '<a class="..">'
       );

?

if that is what you are going for?
