I keep getting this error msg when I watch the file (sass --watch .)

error ./main.scss (Line 1: Invalid CSS after "main.scss": expected "{", was "") [Listen warning]: Listen will be polling for changes. Learn more at https://github.com/guard/listen#polling-fallback.

The message is related to syntax errors. Somewhere in your sass file you are missing a "{". Add the missing curly brace and that error should go away.
