Complex Models relationships

Ok am using rails but am no where near experienced with it, however am trying to accomplish a complicated relation between users, friends and groups

The Users and their Friends part is covered in the Rails Adding social features course, but the group thing is very complicated and I can't wrap my head around it.

I want a user to create a group and be the owner, he can invite others to join or they can request to join and he has to accept, also I need that every user should have data that is specific to this group something similar to activities.

How can I achieve such thing, am using a composer generated app that's built with OmniAuth, CanCan and Rolify
