var warning = document.getElementById("warning");
var button = document.getElementById("makeItRed");
button.addEventListener('click', () => {
  warning.style.backgoundColor = 'red'
});
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
    <head>
        <title>Adding an Event Listener</title>
    </head>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css" />
    <body>
        <div id="warning">

There is a typo in there:

 warning.style.backgoundColor = 'red'
