14,583 PointsJames Arroyo is correct, but I thought op might want an explanation.
With PHP if you want to use a variable inside of quotation marks you have to use double quotes, so one option would look like...
$fullName = "$firstName $lastName";
Or if you want to concatenate strings it would be like James said (don't forget to add the space in the middle). Period (.) is used for concatenation...
$fullName = $firstName . ' ' . $lastName;
