Creating a portfolio with external links to simple projects?

As I work on building my first personal website, I am puzzled when it comes to 'attaching' simple projects I've made to feature on my site. I'm hoping I don't have to create (and pay for) individual domain names for each and every project.

For instance, I will have a folder with all the files for a project that features a simple music keyboard. Would someone be able to outline the steps to creating a thumbnail on my personal website on how to do this to link it to the project?

If you have other projects that you would like to showcase on your own domain, you can actually simply place them in a folder of their own on your hosting account. Then from your main website you can just create a link that directs the browser to that folder!

Just for my own clarification, I have not yet obtained a domain name nor hosting account for my website as I'm still in the process of building it. Would I have to first get both before I can proceed to showcasing linking my projects?
