Customising Buttons

Hi everyone! I am currently in the pretty little things part of the basic Android tutorial. However I am stuck at the "customizing buttons and labels" part. I have a lot of Eclipses, Indigo, Kepler, the ADT from Android and the tutorial eclipse by Ben. None of them seem to be able to let me select the "..." next to every element on the graphical layout. I can't directly change the font size or style etc. I am currently running OSX Mavericks, if anyone could help me at all to solve this so I can carry on, I would deeply appreciate it! PS: I can click some elements and options will show up, but when I select them e.g. Bold|Itallic it will not go through and just constantly keep asking me to select the options.

Hi Heldiney,

That is a bug in the version of Eclipse and the Android tools included in our bundle. I would suggest updating the Android components in the bundle. Check out the section from 2:20-3:40 of this video from the 2nd project for instructions on how to update. Let us know in here if it works or not!

Also, as a workaround, you should be able to use this tip from the Teacher Notes on that video:

Known Issue: On Mountain Lion, you are unable to edit certain properties in the Properties view, like Text Size for the TextView. The workaround is to right-click on the TextView and select Edit TextSize.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for replying, I did try the workaround and it didn't work, so I will try and update the ADT.

Hi Again,

I tried to update and there are no updates available, the tools are all up to date but on Help> Check for Updates nothing new was ready for me to download. So I will carry on doing to Crystal Ball app as I understand later on we will use the gyroscope any-who and the way the button looks is not so important I hope.

Sorry again that it's not working! If you are up to it, you could try switching to the bundle that is now provided on the Android developer site: http://developer.android.com/sdk

It's basically the same as our Treehouse bundle except that it's newer (and thus slightly different). You can find details about making the switch in this older Forum post: https://teamtreehouse.com/forum/android-lesson-cant-run-initialsetupbat#show-comment-5974

I managed to do it. I just coded those aspects of the text view and button, on the activity main itself, rather than select it on the graphical layout. All is working great. Also I am guilty of using Eclipse from the very beginning (not from tree house), I had already had the ADT installed on Eclipse Indigo and also had the Android version of Eclipse the ADT.
