Customize Styles in Google Map Directions API?

I've managed to get my Google Map and Directions displaying where and when I want them... but my ability to style the directions even in a DirectionsPanel div seem very limited. For instance, I was able to change the font size, but not the font face or color (even using !important) ... does anyone know how to get more control of the styling?
