D3.js - Dating Binding Error

I am getting an Error on the second command:

viz.selectAll('circles')
[Array(0)]
viz.selectAll('circles').data(data)
VM3960:1 Uncaught ReferenceError: data is not defined
    at <anonymous>:1:31
