Design View

Why does the Design view of the phone not look like the design. It looks as though it is in a different format.

Android Studio is constantly evolving and changing. The details may differ since the video was shot, but hopefully the gist of it is still the same.

Assuming your talking about the new "blueprint" view there should be three icons over the upper-left corner of the preview to select Design view (black&white grid), Blueprint (grid over blue), and both side-by-side. If your issue is the design of the app itself looks different, you likely choose Basic Activity over Empty Activity for the old Blank Activity.
