Differences between a Child Theme and Theme

In the the example of video tutirial is using a twentyfourteen-child vs a normal twentyfourteen theme.

If you could mention what are the differences between a Child Theme and Theme and why he is using child theme(twentyfourteen) vs a standard theme(twentyfourteen)?

Have downloaed both Child Theme(twentyfourteen) and theme(twentyfourteen), seems child theme are missing files and folders. If you could assist what is measing.
