Are discussions listed in order of when they were started, or do they get bumped to the top of the pile whenever a new post is added to them?

Hi Sean,

So, the "newest" filter will return to you discussions in order of when they were started (e.g. the time of the original post). If you click over to "active," you'll get discussions which are returned to you in order of most recent response in them (bumped to top). Hope that helps :)
