Display Table

Just ran into this neat little strip of code when trying to figure out how to center my unordered list, I have never seen/heard of it (well til today, thanks CSS-Tricks), can anyone explain it because I understand what the other values for display do, but am new to the value "table".

display: table;

i found out about it at http://css-tricks.com/centering-list-items-horizontally-slightly-trickier-than-you-might-think/, when trying to center a list on a website I'm currently working on.
