Do I need separate web hosting accounts for different websites?

I currently have one website published using 1 x domain name and 1 x web host. If I want to publish a completely different site, I would of course need a new domain name, but do I need another web hosting account or can I run multiple websites from only one?

N.B. I'm using Web Hosting For Students, as recommended by Nick Pettit (and, I'm sure, by Zac Gordon!)

Usually yes unless your web hosting company says else. I have 3 websites one of them has it's own hosting package but there was an offer that I can have 2 domain names to be hosted in the same package, so it all depends on your hosting company.
