Do profile points have any extrinsic value?

When I log into Treehouse I see my profile photo at the top right. Next to the photo I see digits that appear to track my progress through the course.

Do the points have any value? Can I purchase something with the points?

Points are earned as you complete Code Challenges, Quizzes, Course Stages, Courses and Tracks. They are also given when forum answers are up-voted or selected as "best answer".

They have no value other than as a motivational tool, like the "badges" that appear on your profile page when you complete a course stage.

You can compare progress (both points and badges) with other students on the Leaderboards page.
