Do we need to name the file .jsx for babel to work?

My atom editor is erroring and me on the .jsx file like it doesn't recognize what it is but it works fine when I serve it locally on the browser. I'm just wondering if we absolutely need to name it .jsx for babel to read the file for cross-platform/old-platform compatibility.
