I would just like to go through the videos and code challenges without using workspace. Would this be ok for a newbie are should I try to use workspaces again.

22,171 Pointsabsolutely not! workspaces is a great place to write your code... but you can use other things as well. such as notepad, or my personal favorite "Sublime Text"
