Do you need "extra"code when using the fade out method?

Extra code mean(when using the fade in method): $("img").hide().fadeIn(1600);

But what would I do with the fade out method?

By "extra code" do you mean that call to "hide" before the fade in? That's just to "preset" the state of the element that will then fade in when the document is loaded. It's not part of the fade effect itself. And if you wanted something to fade out immediately on page load, you would not need to preset the visibility state since it would start out visible.
