Does Schema always appear in front end of the site?

I always thought that Rich Snippets or Schemas was something that went into the head of the document so that search engines pick up on it and display appropriately but doesn't actually appear on front end of the site.

Is this not true? Does this not appropriate for casual users to see actually on your website?
