DOM question, why is this not returning the values of the 'rainbow' id?

ive tried what i think is every possible solution... This is the one i think is my best guess... help me...

var listItems = document.getElementsByClassName('rainbow')[0];

var colors = ["#C2272D", "#F8931F", "#FFFF01", "#009245", "#0193D9", "#0C04ED", "#612F90"];

for(var i = 0; i < colors.length; i ++) {

The element has an ID of rainbow, but not a classname of rainbow.

You could use document.getElementById() instead
