I can't open the project files in my VSCode because it's a .DS_Store file. How do I switch it over to a .js file?

You do not need the .DS_Store files at all. They represent folder metadata for Macs and are likely only there from the project files being created on or copied from a Mac computer. You can safely delete these and it will have no bearing on your project.
JavaScript files have been intentionally left out of the project -- take a look at the "course format" section of the instruction:
You're going to be creating many files as you work through the course project, so the provided code may seem a little empty. All you'll find right now are empty folders, an index.html file, and a style.css file.
