Editing open source projects and updating

Hi,

I've started using a lot of Ruby plugins for my project as it speeds everything up. I know what app I wish to build and while I add the certain features I want, I'm going to have to edit them pretty heavily to get the results I wish.

When these are edited by myself how do updates for the plugins work? Will each update delete my changes or is there something I can do to prevent this?

What you will want to do is fork the git repository that contains the plugin you want. Make your changes to it and use that for your project and it'll be shielded from any updates. Make sure that, because they're open-source, you submit a pull request with any of your changes so you can contribute back to the community. Good luck!
