Effect Convert to shape

When you type the word "text" and convert that word to a rectangle, you don't see this word any more. Is there a way to leave the word visible + be able to add as many "fills" as you want? Thx.

You can convert text to outlines, which turns them into graphics. Then you can add fills and strokes. But, this a permanent change and once you do this you cannot edit the text. Create a copy of your text as backup, and make sure you're not going to need to change your text again.
