emulator won't launch, causes eclipse to crash. I have restarted many times tried adjusting the ram and gpu host option

using windows 8.1 downloaded the 64 bit version

I totally agree with Rahsan, use genymotion, is easy to install and use, and is a lot faster than the eclipse built in emulator.

Have you tried changing GPU Emulation to True in the emulator settings?

honestly....download genymotion....it will save you a lot of pain. There is a plugin for eclipse and the instructions are very easy.
