Go to Build in the dropdown menu and select "clean build". It looks like gradle needs to clean the project. A lot of the times the R resource will give you errors that it can't find it when you need to clean the build.

Nicolas, Thanks for the tip, unfortunately that did not help in my case. Update: error occurs with v 8.2 but w/ same code and files no error in v 8.6
