error: internal error: refs/remotes/origin/master is not a valid packed reference!

I keep getting this error when I'm trying to clone a project on my machine:

$ git clone ~/project newproject Cloning into 'newproject'... done. error: internal error: refs/remotes/origin/master is not a valid packed reference! error: Trying to write ref refs/heads/master with nonexistent object 03c4aba26553ada94925f4112292affd652d0396 fatal: update_ref failed for ref 'HEAD': cannot update the ref 'HEAD'. fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

I'm using git bash.

Why can't I clone the project?
