The relative layout is closed before you put anything into it. The format for the relative layout should look like this:

<relativeLayout
// ... code omited

     >  // add this close , not /> yet

<textView
// code omited
     />  // close the textView completely

</relativeLayout>

anything inbetween the relative layout tags will be put into the relative layout. I hope that helps.
