escape character

Random question but...

why is he using the escape character? I don't get why he needed to added an extra " to begin with.

He wanted to display the string enclosed in quotes in the alert.

The string "complete name" is 13 characters long

vs.

The string complete name is 13 characters long

Without the escape character the browser would think "The string "" ended at the first quote.
