Explanation of an External Style Sheet?

I'm having trouble understanding External Style Sheets. I get what it does, but how it relates to CSS is a bit confusing. In Workspaces, is the "style.css" an External Style Sheet?

Yes, it is a external stylesheet. Some benefits of having one external stylesheet are that: Everything is stored within a single file. Makes it easier to maintain larger websites. Pages load quicker once the main CSS file has been cached.

Yes style.css would be an external style sheet.

Having your css in an external style sheet allows you to better define styles and most importantly use them across more than just one page.

For example style.css can be referenced in many pages so you can reuse the css and have it format your site in a more uniform way without re defining all of your css on every page you write.

It's best to remember it this way:

If the styles are actually written out in you HTML then you have an "internal style sheet" (not recommended)

If the styles are individually written into each HTML element then you have "inline styles" (not recommended)

If the styles are written in a completely separate file from your HTML and is 'included' with a <link rel="stylesheet" ... then you have an external style sheet. (recommended)
