Explanation of Cascade for Dummies

Is there a summary of how the cascade works? I'm find that I'm running into issues with things not showing up, which makes me think I don't understand the rules for ordering properties.

For the most part the cascade isn't what's tripping you up it's a related concept, specificity.

Check out HTML Dog's specificity article to read up about that.

It works like the more specific rule gets chosen over the general rule. You can find more details here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1043001/what-is-the-meaning-of-cascading-in-css or here: http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/cascade.html
