Finding freelance work

Does anyone have any advice for getting some freelance work to help build my portfolio? I am considering trying craigslist and oDesk as options

are you going to be doing freelance web design or something else?

Freelancer, Fiverr ( gotta start somewhere) , Elance , oDesk etc. There is a bunch. Just make accounts on all of them and build a portfolio.

Most looking for development work but so far most projects I have done involved design as well.

What ghost said were good resources, i would also recommend doing that and just actually cold calling a bunch of businesses near you that dont have sites.

You will actually be able to compete more on Freelancer etc with a portfolio. Getting your first person off Freelancer etc can be very very challenging. A great thing to do is kick things off with making a website for a friend. Make the friend pay through Freelancer.com or where ever you want to start selling your self. Then that way your friend can give you a kick ass review to get things going which will make it 10x-100x easier to get Freelance work online. Noone likes to order off any website from the person who has 0 reviews so having your friend go through one of the free lancing sites will help you a bunch in the long run. This is from experience.

Thanks for the advice ghost code. Is this blackhat?

I do not think so. You are just doing an exchange on a site vs in person. The site is getting paid a fee so why would they care? :) Do you work at Freelancer or something? I see your shirt.

Thanks Cesar and Ghost I appreciate you advice.
