Flex basis default value of 0 only works on Safari browsers??

On chrome and firefox browsers if we set .item to a flex property to a value of 1 like this

 .item {
  flex: 1;
 }

The items still break into a newline.

Did anyone using firefox or chrome browser have a different experience?
