Follower at WordPress

I'm taking Zac Gordon's class Managing Users in WordPress. He refers to the user role of Subscriber. But in my WordPress blog I only have the Follower role. Are they just the same?

I think WordPress brought out a new update where they changed Subscribers to Followers
