Force Portrait-Only Mode Without Recreating Activity?

From my understanding, the method in this video to force portrait-only mode still causes the activity to be destroyed and created whenever the device is rotated. It seems inefficient to destroy and create the activity when nothing needs to happen to the activity at all. Am I misunderstanding something or is there a better solution to this problem?
