Forum Enhancement Suggestions

First of all, Treehouse is great and I have had fun & learned a lot through the courses I have taken.

I have some suggestions for the Forum that I think would make it more useful & efficient for students, and perhaps even easier for Treehouse teachers to respond.

  1. Add an option to mark a Forum post with a specific Course/Badge/Step. This would really speed up finding an answer to a question that someone else had trouble with on the same material/quiz/challenge. This also makes is easier for TH teachers to respond to questions on the material they created, since the exact Course/Badge is noted.

  2. I like the Extra Credit assignments. Tagging onto suggestion #1, add a way to post solutions to specific Extra Credit assignments. This would provide a resource for students who are having trouble getting traction on an assignment. It is also very instructional to see how others have solved a problem even if you have a solution.

  3. Finally, also on the same theme, add a 'Focused_Forum' button to go directly to posts for the current Course/Badge you are working on (perhaps the Forum icon with a magnifying glass on top?).

Again, I have found when I am working hard on a course and have a problem, going to the forum takes a lot of time and energy and it can be very de-focusing to search, sift & sort through the forum looking for similar questions. A quick, direct filter on the exact course/badge would save a lot of time and effort. And if there are no questions/answers tagged to the course/badge in question, then I might choose to do a web search for answers sooner rather than later.

If someone posts a question directly from a video, challenge, quiz etc it usually tags that post with the exact video, course and quiz and you can click on it to see others from the same "category". Although not everyone posts from within the video/quiz so they don't all get specifically tagged. So part of the functionality is already in the forums although it could be made clearer. Take a look at some of the posts on the forum and you'll see many have the exact course and video it was posted from and clicking on that category displays all posts for that same course/video.

I always saw the 'Ask a Question' button over there, but assumed it was just a quick link to the Forum-'Ask a Question' (save one click).

There is a short video 'Tips for asking questions' & this tip would be a good addition to that topic. Thx

Now I see the tags on forum posts. Didn't know how those got there, but now I see you can filter on them. Cool.

So the 'Extra Credit Solutions' suggestion could be posts with markup by adding a way to post to the Extra Credit challenges.

I agree an update might be nice. I'm thinking that maybe a search engine would be helpful; you can search vary vaguely by clicking on the topic on a question such as HTML, PHP, CSS, iOS, etc. but you can,t search for a sub-topic of those such as 'Functions' in iOS and such.

I have sent suggestion to add a review button on the challenge questions. It could take you the video where it covers the question. Or a text document where it would explain the question. I think the text explanation would be better.

And yes the forum may take to long I had on response 21 days after the post.

One thing about the whole web-site and not just the forum is that say for example I'm on featured posts and I want to go back to the featured posts I have to click on the button to go back to the forum and then click on the featured posts button again.

I noticed that too. It would be nice be able to step out one level at a time, especially if you drill down too far and there are no posts or answers at that level.
