When I see forum posts with a checkmark, I usually go on to look at unanswered posts. It is a good indicator that the problem has been solved. I had a forum post earlier that I figured out the answer to so I marked it as best answer to let others know I figured it out. I don't really believe that I need to get 12 points for answering my own question.
Does anyone else feel as though you should be able to just mark your own question response as solved and not as "best answer"? I understand that this is a trivial matter but internet points are fun ha.

Courses Plus Student 45,640 PointsI think you could tag a moderator when you found the answer to your own question. That way, he or she could mark your question as answered.

Courses Plus Student 94,610 PointsPerhaps "best answer" can still be used but you don't get the points if you had asked the question. This way we don't need a new thing and you don't get points for helping yourself.
I think that there does need to be a better way to know if people still need help or not. Sometimes questions have been sufficiently answered and are never awarded "best answer". So you still end up having to click through questions with answers to see if it still needs a better answer.
Perhaps there could be a new filtering category like "unanswered" called something like "still need help". You could tag your own question with this only after some time has passed and you have received at least 1 answer. This might cut down on people re-posting their question and also make it easier for people helping to know who really needs help. I think to be useful it would have to expire automatically though. It would be up to the OP to re-tag their question if necessary.
Sorry Chris, I think I'm getting off topic here.
To get back to your question, I do think you should be able to mark your answer as "best answer". If you managed to solve your own problem then don't you feel that your answer was the best answer? It seems like it would be by definition. I think though that if someone else came along after the fact and gave you an even better answer than what you came up with then you should switch your "best answer"

17,781 PointsDefinitely agree. I don't mind the best answer choice, I just don't want points for my own. As for questions expiring, I have used older forum questions to solve new problems so that feature would be good and bad.

Courses Plus Student 94,610 PointsNo, I didn't mean for questions to expire. Only that the "still need help" tag would automatically expire and those questions wouldn't show up in that filter anymore. Some people might take a break from this for 10 or 15 days and we wouldn't want those questions stuck in the "still need help" filter.
I was only suggesting that we let the tag expire. Then when they're ready to get back into it they can re-tag their own question "still need help" and this will bring attention to their old question.

17,781 PointsAh, my mistake. That would be a really nice improvement.

17,781 PointsTrue, but that feels like an unnecessary step. If we solve something, it should be easy to close the question.
