I want to make the Blog Reader App using the fixed tabs + swipe. That template creates fragments and I'm not sure how to use fragments as you use activities. I know they aren't the same but I would like to know how to use them.

Here's a good tutorial on Tabs and FragmentActivities: http://android.codeandmagic.org/2011/07/android-tabs-with-fragments/

We talk about the fragments briefly in the first stage of the Blog Reader App, and you can reference the sample code for the Master-Detail template to see how they work. They are a bit different from Activities, though, so it would help to go through a good tutorial like Amit posted.
