String objects have a method split() that allows you to break a string into parts, returning those parts as a list, the default split character is WHITESPACE. Here is an example using ipython:

In [75]: "this     is  a string with     varying spaces".split()
Out[75]: ['this', 'is', 'a', 'string', 'with', 'varying', 'spaces']
