General question on the Test Factories video

Why did Jason define the friend variable inside the loop rather than defining the variable in the controller? i.e. ''' <% @user_friendships.each do |friendship| %> <% friend = friendship.friend %> ... '''

Could one move the friendship variable to the controller? And if so what's the advantage of defining it in the view? And if not, why not?
