Gesture Recogniser question

Why doesn't this work

                          let action = "longPressAction"

                         let gestureRecognizer = UILongPressGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: action)

when this work?

                           let gestureRecognizer = UILongPressGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: "longPressAction")

I get an error saying"Cannot convert value of type string to type selector"

It is important that i find a way to get the first method to work.
