With your budget I suggest a used 2012-2013 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina ($1200-$1500) or a new 13 inch Macbook Pro Retina ($1200-$1300).

However, windows laptops will always be cheaper with comparable performance. Depends on your taste. For me, I own multiple laptops with Ubuntu and Windows 8 installed, but I use the Macbook Pro more often.

Just recently bought the 15 inch Macbook Pro on eBay for $1200.

If you want OS X, then get a Macbook Pro. You can get linux and windows to run at it. OS X as a VM does not perform very well, and hackintosh seems to be pretty unstable, unless you get a laptop with the correct components.
